A new Musical waiting in the wings…

Hello! Drea here just giving you guys the daily update into the theatre world.

Within the past couple years Broadway has been changing it up and turning famous Disney movies into Broadway shows such as “Shrek the Musical”, “Little Mermaid” and “Mary Poppins”. However, this is not what I’m going to talking about. This one is for all you graphic novel and marvel fans out there. It has been announced that by spring 2010 “Spider-man the Musical” will be making it’s premiere onto the big stage rather than the big screen.

Yes, I said it. Spider-man the Musical! I know what you’re probably thinking and it was probably the same thing I was thinking, so I just as any other confused person would do and I did my research. But in fact it is VERY true. The title of the musical is called “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” under the direction of Julie Taymor (Broadway’s “The Lion King”)  and also Music and Lyrics by U2′s Bono and the Edge. Also, with confirmed Actors Jim Sturgess and Rachel Even Wood as the infamous Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson. As industry insiders have uncovered the shows budget would be the largest in Broadway history (about $40 mil. to be exact).

The story is going to stay the same following the life of a teenager by the name of Peter Parker, whose life makes a turn upside-down (literally) when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and wakes up the next morning clinging to his bedroom ceiling. This bullied science-geek suddenly becomes endowed with amazing powers that he learns through the show. However, like all superhero stories there is always that saying “with great power comes great responsibility” and there’s no exception to this. Throughout the show Spider-Man’s battles hurtle the audience through the origin story both recognizable and unexpected (with new new characters, as well as those familiar faces).

In my opinion I believe this show will have mixed reviews, both from the theatre world and the graphic novel world. Colliding these two worlds seemed unspeakable once upon a time ago but now that the idea is no longer on the table but onto the drawing boards.

Once I find out more information I’ll update you guys!

..until then check back often for more up to date broadway news going on here in San Diego and all over the country!
