Its not just for kids anymore: Green Lantern #36-38 Volume 4
I decided to pick up an issue of Green Lantern volume 4 just to check it out. I open it up and instantly hooked.
What the hell is going on in the DC Universe? I’m sure people know about Green Lantern, but now there is a spectrum of Lanterns out there. This particular arc is called Rage of the Red Lanterns.
Issue 36 is deals with Hal Jordan(Green Lantern) looking for Sinestro, leader of the Sinistro Corps aka Yellow Lanterns who use FEAR to power up their Yellow Power Rings. While on this wild goose chase he is met with a new color of light, blue. We find out the origins of the Blue Lanterns. The Blue Lantern’s rings are powered by Hope. The bearer of the blue ring can be fueled by a beings HOPE. They have the ability to also power up the Green Lanterns Rings. All they have to do is HOPE. The blue lanterns were sent to help Hal find Sinestro and help him survive. FYI Sinestro is a bad guy but it seems that he plays an important part in the upcoming prophecy, The Blackest Night.
Issue 37 picks right off were 36 left off. Hal finds Sinestro along with the Blue Lanterns. Just as he is about to set him free, he is ambushed by the Red Lantern leader Atrocitus. Hal becomes overwhelmed and is coaxed into giving into RAGE! At the end of this issue you are left with his stunning panel!
Ivan Ries art is pretty amazing. This is such a powerful image. Green Lantern now a Red Lantern?
The next issue, #38 is the big climax to this arc. The battle is on. You have Hal Jordan the greatest Green Lantern now a raging Red Lantern and he is very pissed. At this point he is now fighting with Sinestro whom he was suppose to be rescuing. Just when it looks like there is no hope left, in comes the Blue Lanterns to stop Hal. The rest of the Sinestro Corps also arrive to help their leader escape.
Its not too long that Sinestro is free and takes off from this sticky situation. Hal is still red so the blue lanterns decides that the only way to cure him of his rage is to bring HOPE in. They manage to slip a blue power ring on Hal and this is what he turns into:
With Hals new look and power they manage to defeat the Red Lanterns. Hal has no idea what he has become and neither do the Blue Lanterns.
Ivan Reis’s art has gotten exceptionally better! He was a raw talent years ago but polished up well. His style is perfect for this book and this character. Part of what drew me into this was his art and he surely did not disappoint. Geoff Johns story for is genius and captivating. What a great way to bring in conflict and mystery by introducing different spectrums of light into the DC Universe. For a while it was thought to that the only power color was Green but now you have Yellow(Fear), Red(Rage), Violet (Love), Blue (Hope), and soon Orange!!!
Get caught up by getting these issue’s but definately pick up the next issue because its the kickoff for one of DC’s biggest events of the year: The Blackest Night!
