Jerry Herman Receives Tony Award Life Time Achievement Award
Hello! It’s been a while and I have a lot to update you on in the Broadway World. Last Sunday June 7th, 2009 one of Broadway’s most talented composer and lyricist received the Tony Lifetime Achievement Award.
Jerry Herman is an composer and lyricist, known for his work in musical theatre. He’s composed scores for many Broadway musical hits such as ‘Hello,Dolly!’, Mame, and La Cage aux Folles. Over the years, he’s been nominated and won a number of awards throughout the years. Herman picked up musical theatre at a young age by learning how to play the piano and frequently going to see shows with his father.
In the early 1960′s Herman made his Broadway debut with the revue ‘From A to Z’. After that his career took off and has since than worked with some of Broadway leading ladies and gentlemen such as Angela Lansbury, Bernadette Peters and Joel Grey.
Though he is not very popular with the younger theatre audience to this day, I believe that Jerry Herman’s work will always be heard by every generation. I’m glad he recived this award, he deserved this 100% (no pun intended
)
Now, Here’s his acceptance speech from the 2009 Tony Awards. Enjoy!
